The Sally Smith Commencement Grant in Soil, Agriculture, Food and Wine Sciences has been established by Frank Andrew Smith in honour of his wife Sally Smith. Sally was Emeritus Professor in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine and held several positions at the University from 1967 to 2019. Sally was a world authority on the mycorrhizal symbiosis between plants and fungi and was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 2001.
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must:
- Be commencing a program of study in the sciences of soil, agriculture, food or wine
- Be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident of Australia or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa
- Be enrolled on a full time basis in a Commonwealth Supported Place (unless there are special circumstances preventing this, such as disability)
- Demonstrate you are in financial need*
* Applicants must demonstrate financial need and provide supporting documentary evidence at the time of application, e.g. details of income tested Commonwealth income support payment, such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY benefits, or other details of their financial circumstances.
* Evidence of Tertiary Access Payment (TAP) application or approval does not demonstrate financial need.
Selection of the successful candidate will be made according to:
- Financial need
- Answers to questions on the application form
- Preference for a student who has relocated from a regional, rural or remote location, or experiencing another disadvantage

- The Scholarship must be taken up in the year in which it is offered
- Students receiving other University of Adelaide Scholarships may apply for this Scholarship
