The Esther Burns/Department of Education Country Teaching Scholarships have been established by the University of Adelaide in conjunction with the Department for Education.  Funding for these scholarships has been provided by a bequest to the University from Esther Burns, a well respected teacher who taught at Port Augusta High School in 1968 and then Quorn Area School from 1970 until her retirement in 1976, with matching funds from the Department for Education.

Up to 6 scholarships will be awarded to students undertaking their final year of a Bachelor of Teaching or a Master of Teaching program of study who are qualified to teach Science or Maths and who intend to complete a country teaching practicum at a South Australian Public Primary or High School.

Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia studying as a Commonwealth supported student and must remain enrolled on a part time or full time basis in the approved program for which the scholarship was approved.

Selection of the successful candidates will be made according to academic merit.  Academic merit for continuing students will be determined according to students’ cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) or equivalent scores.

The Scholarship must be taken up in the year in which it is offered: acceptance of the Scholarship cannot be deferred. If a student declines the Scholarship offer, the Scholarship will be offered to the next eligible student.

Students in receipt of other University of Adelaide Scholarships may apply for this Scholarship.
