The Taplin Indigenous Bursary for International Education has been established by Emeritus Professor John Taplin to support the expenses of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students or staff involving engagement with other First-Nations peoples overseas.

Applicants must be and identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person undertaking study as a Commonwealth supported student and must remain enrolled on a full time or part time basis or be a staff member.

Students in receipt of other University of Adelaide Scholarships may apply for this Bursary.

The bursaries are open to both current Indigenous staff and students of the University of Adelaide and are available to assist with the expenses of international education and travel.

The recipients must use the bursary funds only for the following purposes:

  • To undertake and engage in a project in a country with First Nation peoples (with a preference for New Zealand and Canada) that is relevant to issues facing Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people; or
  • to attend a conference or visit relevant centres to investigate issues of relevance to Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people; and
  • For legitimate costs associated with travel to the study project or conference such as airfares, accommodation and program expenses

Up to two bursaries per year will be awarded. The value of the bursaries is up to $5,000 each dependent on the number of successful applicants.

Selection of the successful candidates will be made according to academic merit ensuring funds are used to support study projects with First-Nations peoples with a preference for programs in Canada or New Zealand. Academic merit for commencing students will be determined according to ATAR or equivalent scores. Academic merit for continuing students will be determined according to students’ cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) or equivalent scores.

The Taplin Indigenous Bursary for International Education recipient/s must also undertake at least one of the following activities to share the travel experience with others:

  • Present and participate in Wirltu Yarlu orientation;
  • Present to your Faculty or workplace of origin;
  • Participate in the exchange student network;
