Are you looking for impactful research?  Great PhD opportunities are offered on confronting climate change, digital technologies for irrigated agriculture, enhancing water supply and realising value from within rural communities.  All PhDs work closely with industry partners in the iconic Murray-Darling Basin.

 

The One Basin Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) offers attractive PhD packages across multiple universities in Australia (Australian National University, Charles Sturt University, Flinders University, The University of Adelaide, The University of Melbourne, The University of Sydney):

 

  • Up to 4-year scholarship including a ½ year internship with an industry partner.

 

  • Full scholarships ($35,000 per annum) or top-ups ($10,000 per annum) are available and are open to domestic and international students.

The University of Adelaide will host two of these PhD Programs, listed below:

 

PhD Project ID 1BPhD-02 – Opportunities and Challenges for using brackish groundwater to increase agricultural productivity and resilience in the Murray-Darling Basin

Principal Supervisor: Professor Holger Maier

 

PhD Project ID 1BPhD-06 – Unlocking the potential of digital irrigation technologies

Principal Supervisor: Dr Matthew Knowling

 

 

The PhD program seeks to achieve gender balance and attract candidates from all walks of life, with Australians of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander heritage particularly encouraged to apply.

 

Opportunities for travel, development and engagement with a strong research network that is being developed through the 10-year CRC.

 

Each candidate will be based in one of the following research hubs: Loxton (South Australia), Mildura (Victoria), Griffith (NSW) and Goondiwindi (Queensland) with associated node in Narrabri (NSW).

 

 

Eligibility:

Applications are open to Australian Citizens, Permanent Residents and International Students who are acceptable as candidates for a PhD degree at the University of Adelaide.

PhD Project ID 1BPhD-02 – Opportunities and Challenges for using brackish groundwater to increase agricultural productivity and resilience in the Murray-Darling Basin

Eligibility: Candidates with Masters or honours degrees in the following disciplines, or with equivalent research or work experience will be favourably considered: Engineering (preferably Environmental, Civil or Systems), Science (preferably Computer, Environmental or Spatial)

 

PhD Project ID 1BPhD-06 – Unlocking the potential of digital irrigation technologies

Principal Supervisor: Dr Matthew Knowling

 

Eligibility: Candidates with Masters or Honours degrees in the following disciplines, or with equivalent research or work experience will be favourably considered: Environmental engineering; Management and information technology; Water resource management; Agricultural systems; Data science.

 

 

Stipend:

The major scholarship will be for up to 4 years with a ½ year internship with an industry partner and has a stipend of $35,000 per annum.

 

The supplementary scholarship has a stipend of $10,000 per annum.

 

Both scholarships are likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval.
