The Adelaide Graduate Research School (AGRS), in partnership with Adelaide-based SME Insight Via Artificial Intelligence (IVAI), is offering up to two internship opportunities for PhD students in the fields of Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and/or Machine Learning.

Insight Via Artificial Intelligence is an innovative Adelaide-based SME with extensive experience in the research, development, and deployment of artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtual/augmented reality, and data analytics technologies.

IVAI is currently working on research projects related to applications in Cyber Security, Space, Health, and Government, and is seeking two University of Adelaide PhD students to undertake research and development in any one of these fields. The successful candidates will undertake a minimum of 60 FTE business days of research and development with the company. The AGRS will support eligible students with a research internship scholarship (for 60 business days at the standard RTP rate).

About the projects
IVAI’s projects cover many areas of AI and Machine Learning, including Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Computer Vision. The nature of the research and development activities undertaken by the successful applicants may include:


  • Drawing on research literature and relevant theoretical frameworks
  • Identification and collation of relevant data sets
  • Training and implementing a range of models and techniques
  • Conducting experiments and analysing results
  • Writing or preparing investigative reports to summarise findings and suggest future research activities


Expected research outcomes for students may include:

  • Experience in conducting research inartificial intelligence, including identification of and experimentation with the latest leading-edge techniques.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a project team in a structured environment.
  • Exposure to real-world applications for research and the challenges that clients are looking to solve

The selected applicant, their supervisor, and IVAI will have the opportunity to discuss the nature of research and development activities and working arrangements post-selection.


The PhD student must be:

  • within the first 18 months of their candidature,
  • willing to undertake the research internship for a minimum duration of 60 FTE business days,
  • making satisfactory progress,
  • undertaking research in an area aligned with the proposed research internship project,
  • proficient in Python, and
  • an Australian citizen.
