The University of Adelaide is offering a full-time PhD scholarship to support research into soil water repellency (SWR) in South Australian cropping systems.

SWR is a condition where soils temporarily resist wetting, reducing water availability for plants. It affects over 5 million hectares across southern and western Australia, costing grain growers an estimated $100 million annually through poor crop establishment, reduced water and nutrient uptake, and ultimately lower yields. SWR is influenced by factors such as organic matter content, soil texture, plant species, crop rotations, and stubble management.

This PhD forms part of a collaborative project between Adelaide University, Murdoch University and the University of Queensland, funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). The broader goal is to develop practical management options for Australian grain growers to mitigate the impacts of SWR.

The successful candidate will be based at the Waite Campus at Adelaide University and will determine soil properties and non-wetting characteristics for SA field sites to establish baseline levels and residual crop contributions, while contributing to the broader project. The project will combine field measurements and laboratory analysis, using cutting-edge techniques including dynamic contact angle measurement, X-ray diffraction, mid-infrared spectroscopy, and synchrotron-based approaches to understand the mechanisms driving SWR and evaluate potential mitigation strategies.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated student to contribute to solving a nationally significant agricultural problem, while gaining expertise in advanced soil science techniques and working within a multidisciplinary team of researchers.

Students with relevant expertise and interest in soil science, agricultural science, environmental chemistry or another relevant field are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia who are acceptable as candidates for a PhD degree at Adelaide University.

Stipend

The scholarship will be for 3.5 years and has a stipend of $35,300 (indexed annually) per annum.

It is likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval.
