At a time when democracy is under threat around the world, we still have no comparative example of a longstanding democracy falling into authoritarian rule, and we are therefore badly placed to defend our own. This project seeks to create that comparison by studying the Roman republic’s collapse in the 50s BCE with reference to recent scholarship on democratic breakdown and competitive authoritarianism, concepts drawn from political science. The overall project is funded by the Australian Research Council as part of its DECRA scheme, with the title How Republics Die: Rome’s democratic breakdown in the first century BCE. The PhD student will be supported to develop their own independent research project on a subject of relevance to this study.
The University of Adelaide Research Scholarship (Roman History) is funded by the University of Adelaide to support a full-time PhD student who is commencing research in the political history of the late Roman republic or triumviral period.
