This University of Adelaide Research Scholarship is connected to the Australian Research Council Future Fellowship project Critical Conversations: An Ethnographic Study of Australian Organ Donation.

There is an urgent need for new culturally sensitive ways of improving organ donation in Australia. This research aims to identify how death, dying and organ donation are communicated and constituted in and across medical spaces and family relationships – in particular, by identifying the multiple intersections of ethnicity, religion, gender, class, age, and family hierarchies, in the context of medical technologies and clinical interactions. It will deliver new knowledge and advance what we know about and how we respond to organ donation, particularly in cross-cultural contexts. The PhD student will be supported to develop their own independent research project on a subject of relevance to this study.

The scholarship is funded by The University of Adelaide to support a full-time PhD student who is commencing research in anthropology or sociology.

Eligibility:

Applicants must have completed and been awarded a relevant Bachelor Degree with Honours in anthropology or sociology. Excellent academic writing and communication skills are essential. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia/international students who are acceptable as candidates for a PhD degree at the University of Adelaide.

Stipend:

The scholarship will be for 3 years and has a stipend of $28,854 (2022 rate, indexed annually) per annum.

It is likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval.  Details of any terms and/or benefits can be found in the attached Conditions of Award/Rules.
