Background
Graham, Hugh, Jenny and Karen Possingham, graduates of the University of Adelaide (the University), established the Possingham Fund to support a postgraduate research scholarship in environmental sustainability in honour of their parents and parents-in-law, Max and Barbara, who were both graduates of the University. Barbara was one of the first women at the University to achieve a Doctorate in Physics (1956).
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply, candidates must be:
- An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, Permanent Humanitarian visa holder or international student;
- Enrolled in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at the University of Adelaide;
- A recipient of a major scholarship; and
- Undertaking research relevant to environmental sustainability. *Note, environmental sustainability is defined in the broadest possible sense and is open to applicants from any discipline (including but not exclusive to: engineering, law, mathematics, all the sciences, the social sciences and the arts) as long as the research has the potential to deliver a positive environmental outcome.
Continuance of the award is dependent on the successful candidate remaining enrolled on a full-time basis, unless taking a period of leave or studying at half time in line with the Conditions of Award.
Value and Benefits
- The value of the scholarship is $12,000 per year and $36,000 in total.
- The tenure of the scholarship is up to three years, or until the date of submission of the thesis (whichever is earlier), subject to satisfactory progress.
- No extensions will be considered and no other allowances are payable.
- Any outstanding funds owing upon thesis submission (up to $36,000) will be paid to the student as a ‘completion bonus’.
